Act I

Scene I

EXT. SOMEONE’S BACKYARD - EVENING.

The music is loud. There’s bodies everywhere. Flashing lights. Flashing lights. The music is loud, but it’s music you like, so you’re dancing. Bobbing your head to the beat, shuffling your feet in some semblance of a two step, close enough to the beat. If that constitutes as dancing. You’ve had a few drinks.

A group of people appear next to you— startle you out of your serotonin induced oblivion.

One of them is a friend. They move closer and shout down your ear, introducing the other three. You smile back in response.

One of them is no stranger. Your eyes found them the moment you arrived.

THEM

Hi

YOU

  Hi

They say something else, but you don’t quite catch it. You lean in. They lean in. You catch a whiff of their scent and all coherent thought is memory.

When you first walked out of the backdoor and into the open space where the party was being held,  the sun was slowly setting, and they were standing right at its eclipse, pouring themselves a drink.

Someone said something to them, and they turned, smiling. Your eyes met for a fleeting second, and then you walked away in search of your people.

After a few hours of being constantly aware of where they are standing, how they are dancing, here they are, close, watching your lips.

  SOMEONE

Kirabo! Kirabo!

You open your eyes and straighten.

   SOMEONE

I’m about to send you

out!

Really, it’s one hell of a humid morning and you’re sitting in a Maths 2 mechanics class.

You’re seventeen, and you’re yet to have your first drink.
