I saw this video where a guy talks about questions we (should) ask at first dates. He reasons that questions like ‘who is your Spotify no.1 artiste?’ are pointless, and questions like, ‘if we get into it in public, how likely are you to scream at me?’ tell you more about the person you’re getting to know. Kinda makes sense. However, I still think the ‘artiste’ question is still valid.
In Austin Kleon’s book ‘Steal Like an Artist’ he talks about how we are mashup of what we choose to let into our lives— a sum of the things we love, of our influences. If you think about it, it checks out. You know…how you pick up mannerisms from the people you spend the most time with. It’s bigger than that too, cause in a way we choose who we get to be. In the book, he suggests we make a list of artists we admire, and want to steal from. I’ve made additions to mine over the years, and it sits at 15 artists today— performers, writers, rappers, designers, that I hope to be a sum of. So, the ‘artiste’ question is definitely valid.
Anyway, feel free to leave that Travis scott fanatic on read.
Also, highly recommended the book.
